A Swarm of Socks

Monday, June 25, 2007

I call these Swarm

Pattern: My own! I have christened thee Swarm Drunken Bees.
Yarn: Socks That Rock lightweight in Midsummer's Night
Needles: US1 dpns

I finished them!

And then I sat for hours and hours more trying to think of a good name for them.

Everything that I came up with was bee-themed, because I think the zigzag pattern looks drunk yet curiously deliberate, bzzzz like a bee in flight bzzzz, and the mini-cables on the side resemble honeycombs.

So I came up with
1. Bumblebee (too cutesy)
2. Honeybee (way too cutesy)
3. Worker Bee (too slavish)
4. Royal Jelly (too weird)
5. Beehive (maybe)
6. Swarm (hmm)

Yessss, swarm...I see a swarm of stitches swirling in and around each other.

It's not the prettiest sounding word though, unfortunately. But a quick run through the thesaurus in my head came up with lovely words that conjured up such lovely pictures, such as locusts, plague, infestation...So back to Swarm it was.

Now I name you Drunken Bees! Back from a long day's work, intoxicated with nectar, buzzing and teetering and bouncing off each other just outside your honeycombed nest!

I call these Swarm

Close-up of heel: Slip stitch at the center, flanked by honeycombs which continue down from the leg, and purl gutter, and bordered by more slip stitches. Finished with a square heel.

At some point I will write up a pattern for these, probably after we move (3 more weeks!). When I do it will most likely be a pseudo-pattern: more of a general overview rather than stitch-by-stitch instructions. Really all you need to know is the stitch pattern, and if you know how to knit a sock, you can do the rest without explicit instruction, and use your favorite methods of constructing the heel, the toe, up or down...I just hate telling people what to do, especially when there's no right way or wrong way about it!

Swarm

Bzzzzz!

Cute! Love the way they look in that yarn!

I love those socks! I would name them Blue Bee :)
Monday, June 25, 2007 12:51:25 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
The socks are beautiful! How about naming them Queen Bee, because the person wearing them will be the queen with the other bees swarming around the honeycomb working to keep her happy?

swarm isn't bad..emicat is onto something though..Queen Bee. :)
Monday, June 25, 2007 2:05:08 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Love, love, love! These are so gorgeous! I love that they're complex but not in a too-much-going-on sort of way.

Three weeks is enough time for me to come up with a soundtrack for these - lots of bee songs out there..."Flight of the Bumblebee", Tori Amos' "The Beekeeper", anything by the Bee Gees.... (Oh, and of course, any record's "bee-side". *groan*)

I like Swarm - can totally see that drunken bee! I agree that a set of directions rather thana total pattern is a great idea - easier for you. and less wasted effort, as surely we all change patterns to be toe-up/down, heel-flap/short row etc etc to suit our own predilections?

Good luck with the move...
Monday, June 25, 2007 2:41:37 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Woohoo -- those are gorgeous!!
Monday, June 25, 2007 3:39:18 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)

I think I'm in love! Those are bee-utiful. Sorry. I couldn't resist. ;)
Monday, June 25, 2007 3:55:49 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
You thinking of writing this one up? Because I haven't seen a heel that pretty in a long damn time.
Monday, June 25, 2007 3:56:44 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Um, yeah. I got so excited about these socks I didn't even read the rest of the post. *looks sheepish*
Monday, June 25, 2007 4:04:14 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Those socks are amazing...! I think Swarm is an awesome name; they are wicked and swirly and not at all cutesey, so they deserve a rockin' name! ;) It's a keeper!
Monday, June 25, 2007 4:23:12 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Great socks!

Were these top-down or toe-up?
Monday, June 25, 2007 4:35:16 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
I am not an avid sock knitter, but I must say that these are beautiful. That heel is very interesting and just might move me to knit a second pair of socks when you've supplied us with the pattern.
Monday, June 25, 2007 4:36:47 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
oooh, great socks! Love the pattern. Swarm is a fine name, tho' I like the Queen Bee suggestion, too.
Monday, June 25, 2007 4:52:24 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
I LOVE these! They look complex, but oh, so cozy. And that's just a perfect yarn. And the name is great, too. :)
Monday, June 25, 2007 4:59:53 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Wooooot for Drunken Bees! :) I love them.
Monday, June 25, 2007 5:15:27 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
These are fab! Esp. love the heel.
Monday, June 25, 2007 5:32:17 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
These are great - love the heel especially. And the name is great - reflects the pattern and because, you know, socks are so warm - swarm! (groan!)
Monday, June 25, 2007 5:44:17 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Holy socks, Batman! Those are beyond beautiful! What a gorgeous design. I love it.
Monday, June 25, 2007 5:51:22 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
I absolutely love those! And that's my favorite way to do socks - I knit the same pair over and over, simply plugging in different stitch patterns.
Monday, June 25, 2007 6:08:07 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Those socks are beautiful. What a fantastic pattern. I can't wait to buy it! Good luck with the move.
Monday, June 25, 2007 6:25:21 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Fabulous! I definitely see some drunken bee action in the stitch pattern.
Monday, June 25, 2007 8:57:04 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Love the socks! Drunken bees...I can totally see them tumbling out of a huge peony and tipsily buzzing their way home. Can't wait for the contruction guide!
Good luck with the move!!! :)

Monday, June 25, 2007 9:57:27 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
These are absolutely gorgeous! If you were to knit them as knee high socks, they could be the Drunken Bees' Knees.
Monday, June 25, 2007 10:22:27 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Very cool, I love the cabley detail down the heel. Heh, drunken bees. Now that's my kind of sock.
Monday, June 25, 2007 11:00:19 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Beautiful socks! I hope you do post the stitch pattern after your move. I love, love, love cables on socks.
Monday, June 25, 2007 11:04:27 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Those socks are buzzing in my head! I can't wait to see your 'instructions' for the cabling you chose.
Fan-frickin-tastic!
Monday, June 25, 2007 11:29:40 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
what fantastic socks. Yes, pattern please!!!
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 12:02:43 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Such a nice pattern! Good idea on keeping the pattern instructions minimal, too. I like the way Ashley put it, it's not a pattern, it's a "construction guide"!
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 2:18:04 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Flight of the bumblebee. I am with Alyson. Unless you want to go to French - abeille (that has been into the wine)
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 6:50:50 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Those are fantastic. Can't wait till the pattern is ready.

Very appropriate name for them! They're gorgeous!
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 8:31:15 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Those are fantastic! The heel is especially cool! I really like the way the honeycomb stitches continue down the heel--can you please make sure to include some details on how to work the heel when you write up some instructions?

And good luck with the packing before the move!
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 8:41:40 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Love the socks! I echo everyone else on saying the heel is wonderful. I think Drunken Bee is a great name, very evocotive of the stitch pattern.
