I get involved

Tuesday, May 01, 2007

Everyone, be proud of my unsocial, ungathery self, for I have done the previously unthinkable and joined a knit-along. Sockapalooza 4, everybody, Sockapalooza 4 and I are BFF's!! In fact I was so excited to get my pal's information last night that I immediately casted on and finished a sock!

Twisted Flower Sock

Tada! Isn't it a beauty???

OK not really. I mean the part about having started the sock last night. It is definitely, without question, very beautiful, so much so that I will buy for my lovely little sock a little sparkly tiara and build her a little runway so that she may sashay her pretty self around the house for all to admire. You can thank CookieA for this brilliant pattern, called the Twisted Flower Sock.

I started it several weeks ago and have been knitting it very off and on. Through the first round of pattern I had a sneaking suspicion that it was going to be too big for me. I kept chugging along though, one because the pattern is, well, so drop-dead gorgeous, and so fun to do, and second, I was hoping that perhaps I would be assigned to someone who might specifically mention liking
- sock yarns with that tight beady twist (as Cherry Tree Hill Supersock has)
- solid colored yarns (this one's in Burgundy)
- and had a slightly bigger foot than me, maybe half an inch or so longer and wider...

If all applied I would be able to just go ahead and knit this for my pal.

And wouldn't you know it: Check, check, and check on all three counts!

Twisted Flower Sock

I didn't follow the pattern through to the heel, fearing it would too loose.

But I might very well change my mind. It is only May (May!?!) afterall...

*****

So speaking of swaps, I'd like to take this final opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the Knitterly Letter Swap. I hope everyone enjoyed writing and receiving their letters. I did. There was a period where I had a letter waiting for me in the mailbox for 4 consecutive days. It was better than Christmas! I owe several replies...Anyway, there were a few snafus with lost letters, returned letters, etc. and I tried my best to follow up with people, but of course it's impossible to police and to make sure every letter gets to where it needs to go. Last week I paired up all letterless folks who contacted me with a "savior," and they sent their letters out to you almost immediately (thank you saviors! and those who volunteered but didn't get used). So I really hope all of you who joined have received at least one letter, and that you've got your letter-writing juices flowing enough to continue writing more!

Well I'll have them if you don't want to give them to your Sockapalooza pal! They're gorgeous! I joined Sockapalooza too - my first knitted thing outside of the letter swap which didn't involve knitted things, y'know?

The Twisted Flower sock is so beautiful, I think a tiara is totally appropriate.

One last THANK YOU for all the effort you put into the Knitterly Letter Swap. After sending off my letter (and samples of American yarn) to England, I received a sweet letter and a parcel full of lovely English fiber...or fibre as they say across the pond. Some I had never seen before...too fun :) So, thanks again and Happy Spring!

Your sock is amazing! I read your blog for the first time several weeks ago and I missed the the Knitterly Letter Swap. I am so disappointed. If you do it again, I definitely want to participate. I guess I'll just have to read every day so I don't miss it.

I think I can safely say that you've got a Sock that Rocks, even if it isn't made with, y'know, Socks that Rock yarn. And to think, you started out hating socks! Just look at the amazement you've got goin' on.

Oh my gosh your sock is beautiful. I was hoping maybe I would be your pal, but I didn't mention any of those things. Darn! I just bought yarn for my sock pal (I think her preference was stated as "Pink Pink Pink"). Should be fun :)

1) The Twisted Flowers sock is beautiful! I've been dying to knit this, but since I have no less than THREE sweaters on the needles I can't justify casting on for another project. *sigh*

2) Thank you so much for organizing the Knitterly Letter Swap! I still owe a response (Sorry about that, Dawn! I'll get right on it), but it was so much fun getting letters in my box and not knowing what was inside them. :-D

I know a savior would have been assigned to my downstream by now, but I WILL be sending her a letter; I am owning up and apologizing BIG TIME for not having sent yet; can you forgive me, once you find out who I am, o knitterly letter person?

I replied to my upstream and she should be getting that soon, I hope that our correspondence continues!

I have no good excuse for not having sent to my downstream. I am sorry, and I'll be sending you a letter this week!

Sare in UT.

I love those socks! So intricate and gorgeous...almost too beautiful to wear.
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 5:35:47 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Those socks are so worthy of a tiara, and a red carpet, and a throne, and loyal worshippers - just the perfect combination of pattern, yarn and colour (wish I was your sock pal...)
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 5:43:20 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Ooh. I need to check out this Cookie chick. I think she's more popular than ripple blankets, right now.
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 6:24:31 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Holy crap, you knit a sock in a night? Can you come to my house and show me how to do that???? Even if I could sit and knit straight I think it would take me at least a couple days per sock.

Your gorgeous sock has made me itch to start a new pair. I have some bright pink CTH - 12 oz of it too - and I'm just dying to dig in. I want to wait for a ball winder that I ordered to arrive though - all that winding by hand would be a bear.
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 6:37:43 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Wow, what luck! But i don't know how you will manage to give it away {too big or not} it is GORGEOUS! that Cookie is one clever gal! :0)
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 7:00:21 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Ooh! Oooh! I put that I like those things! I will now lie back and dream of these being my Sockapalooza socks.
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 8:42:36 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
I LOVE those socks! I love the color and the pattern! Your Sockapalooza pal is so lucky!
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 9:00:08 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Gorgeous. You will have one lucky pal if you decide not to snag them for yourself...a tiara would just be icing.
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 9:21:20 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Oh my goodness, those are the most gorgeous socks I have ever seen - seriously, I am floored. Beautiful! That is one lucky sock-pal-person.

(And I must hang my head in shame; I have been super-late in responding to my letter swap partners. I am really sorry about that, but my responses are finally in the mail and on their way.)

*beautiful* sock. This yarn and color are really perfect for the TF pattern. And another big thanks for hosting the letter swap -- it was such a creative idea, and a swell way to use up some of our fancy stationery. :)
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 11:31:34 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Wow, your pictures are fabulous! It looks very elegant in that color. I wish I'd known about the Knitterly Letter Swap. I am so behind in blog reading, I don't think I'll ever catch up.

I'm intrigued by your background. Do you have carved wood furniture?
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 12:24:34 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Cookie A is a flipping genius with the socks. You should definitely give those to your sock pal - she'll love them. Plus they are so great it should be easy to knit a second pair for yourself that fit you!
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 12:59:49 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
I envy your very lucky sockapalooza pal. the sock is stunning!
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 2:06:04 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Well, I was VERY relieved when you admitted this wasn't one night's work... I am in the process of making the (much less complex) cablenet socks (knitty)) and they're taking me forever.

Good job with the swap, by the way, as someone who got rescued - I still have had lots of pleasure in the swap - in writing my letter as much as anything!
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 7:42:22 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
I wish I was your sock pal. WOW.

Thank you for hosting the swap - it was great fun!
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 11:15:04 AM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
i didn't sign up. i should have signed up. the socks could have been mine.
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 2:08:49 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
The sock is beautiful!

I'm wondering, though . . . how stretchy is it? I've had a really bad run of luck with various patterns, like Elfine and Monkey, that look beautiful, but which aren't stretchy enough for me. (This may be because I knit pretty tightly.) Is there good stretch in the Twisted Flower pattern?

And yes, I agree with Emily--I got rescued, too, and I really appreciate both the chance to participate in the swap and all the work you did organizing it and finding saviors. Thank you!
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 3:34:48 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
I'm your sockapalooza secret sock pal! Funny, I've been a subscriber to your blog for awhile now, and logged into get my match info after seeing it on your blog. And you were my pal. Cool!

Those socks are bee-you-ti-ful.
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 5:00:56 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Oh. My. God. I hope to god I'm your sockpal. Those socks are beautiful! I've been coveting that pattern ever since Cookie lauched her site. Beautiful work.
Friday, May 04, 2007 4:14:31 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Really beautiful socks! I wish I'd get a pair of those (but unfotunately I'm too late for the Paloooxa...)
Saturday, May 05, 2007 2:05:39 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Gorgeous! I've never made a sock but I purchased this sock pattern as soon as Cookie posted it on her site.
I'm bummed that I missed the letter swap - perhaps next time.
Monday, May 07, 2007 5:25:02 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Wow, that sock is absolutely lovely, and I am not a sockey person! nice work!
Wednesday, May 09, 2007 7:45:26 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Hey, your sock is so pretty! What size needles did you use? I'm trying to decide what to use... does the cable-y fabric have much stretch or no? Just curious... don't want mine to end up being too small...
Monday, May 14, 2007 9:18:29 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
My jaw dropped and my eyes just about popped outa my had when I thought the Twisted Flower sock was what you knit in an evening! I thought iIwas going to see a cute little footie sock. I would love to meet the knitter that could pull that off, it'd be like speed reading for knitters. Gorgeous sock!
