My three things

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Why, I'm glad you asked. The three things I would bring with me to a deserted island would be 1) mojitos, 2) VanBuren, and 3) a Jane Austen book.

I love Jane Austen

Don't you wish she had written more??

The problem is deciding which.

It would probably be Emma, being the most humorous (I think) with the added bonus of being the lengthiest.

Even so my time on the deserted island should not last longer than a couple of days. It would take me only that long to finish the book, the mojitos would be long gone for sure, and Veebs would be too since I wasn't given a fourth option (Cat Chow, or roast beef...Or Pride and Prejudice. The cat needs something to read too).

And we all know that cats don't survive more than a minute or two past missing a meal (to listen to them tell it, at least).

Ah, but my favorite Austen lit is her shortest. By far, Persuasion makes the most rotations in and out of my bookshelf.

I'd think the best way to get around deciding which Austen to take would be to get one of those big volumes with all her books. Just one question, though -- is Duck offended that you wouldn't take him to the deserted island?

*sigh* yes I wish she had written more. A few years ago I would've said Pride and Prejudice but Persuasion is probably my lit pick and would definitely find its way onto my deserted island.

I have the Norton Emma and the Bantam Mansfield Park editions too! It's like looking at my Austen shelf, though mine are being propped up with a cake of yarn and not a pig. :)

Ha ha ha - what you need is a volume of Jane Austen's complete works, and then there is no deciding at all.

(I am fortunate enough to own a handsome hardcover of her full works - a very thoughtful gift. I love drinking tea and curling up with it, though perhaps I should try it with a mojito ;)

SISTER!!! I have coped with the shortness of her writing life by finding some acceptable reincarnations: Hilary McKay's Casson family series, Angel Thirkell, Elinor Lipman. . . . that fattens the ol' reading list a little and one can make the trip through last a little bit longer.

Your sweater is jaw-dropping. Just so you know.

RE the sweater, I agree with Becky. Amazing.

Oh that is so true. And watching the Jane Austen series on PBS is even better.
